3 Tips to Master any Subject at your Own Pace
Tip #1: Adaptive Practice
Practice! Practice! Practice! Is the best way to master any concept. But students often get demotivated when they get most of their answers wrong during practice, especially when it’s a new concept. This happens when the initial questions they solve are of a high difficulty level and are slightly above their current level of understanding of the concept.
The right way to practice is through adaptive tests. Adaptive tests are those tests that first pose easy and simple questions. Just like games that start with a ‘beginner’ level, adaptive tests start with beginner-level questions. You will come across tougher questions as you progress through the test. Whenever you get stuck at a question, you will get a hint. If you still get the answer wrong, you will be given explanations to reinforce the concept. This way, you can master the entire concept by the time you complete the test.
Tip #2: Mock Tests and Previous Years’ Question Papers
A common mistake that students make is to keep mock tests and previous years’ question papers for the last. The right approach would be to first finish preparing the entire syllabus once, and then practice as many mock tests and previous years’ question papers as you can. This has twin benefits — you will identify questions and concepts that are most frequently asked, and you will know your weak areas. The next step should be to revise the syllabus again focusing on these weak areas and frequently asked questions. Another thing that you should take into account is the timing. When practicing mocks and previous papers, try solving the questions within the time limit of the actual examination. This way, you’ll get trained on writing well even under pressure.
Tip #3: Custom Tests
When you practice questions from books and learning websites, you get a mix of questions from all parts of the syllabus. Instead, if you can create your own tests for questions from only those chapters or concepts you want to work on, you can save time. There are two ways in which you can use custom tests to get better at a subject:
For concepts you are weak in: Create a custom test that only has questions from chapters or concepts you are weak in. Practice as many such tests as you can until you see a marked improvement in your score.
For concepts you are strong in: Create a test with questions from concepts you are strong in. Try working on these in the shortest time possible. You can set your preferred time duration for these tests. Try reducing the time duration with every subsequent test to increase speed and efficiency.
