The world is staring at the worst crisis since the Cold War as tensions escalate between Russia and Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a military operation in Ukraine on Thursday with explosions heard soon after across the country and its foreign minister warning a “full-scale invasion” was underway.

In an address to Russia and the world, the Russian president Vladimir Putin recognized two breakaway regions Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine as independent republics (independent countries) and described Ukraine as an integral part of Russia’s history from the USSR era.

Russia is sick and tired of NATO expansion. Don’t buy the stories of “Orange Revolutions” popping up all over its borders. Also, Russia pushes all involved parties to keep their promise and comply with the Minsk agreements. So this is the reason why Russia is trying to invade Ukraine.

Russia is one of the biggest producers of crude oil. The impact of high oil prices amid the worsening of tensions between Russia and Ukraine could hit Indian shores, raising fuel inflation and the country’s oil import bill. India could face higher inflation for a long period unless the government sharply cuts taxes on petrol and diesel.

India, a net importer of oil, buys very little oil and gas from Russia. However, it could be indirectly impacted if the West puts sanctions on Moscow, the second-largest oil producer in the world.

India advised its citizens in Ukraine to consider leaving the country temporarily. “In view of uncertainties of the current situation in Ukraine, Indian nationals, particularly students whose stay is not essential, may consider leaving temporarily,” the Embassy of India in Kyiv said in a statement.

“I believe it is necessary to take a long-overdue decision, to immediately recognize the independence and sovereignty of the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Lugansk People’s Republic,” he said.

“Putin has just launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Peaceful Ukrainian cities are under strikes,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted.
