Before the invention of calculus, many mathematicians used logarithms to transform multiplication and division problems into addition and subtraction problems. To get another number in logarithms, the power of some numbers (typically the base numbers) is increased. It is the exponential function’s reciprocal.

Any exponential function can be expressed in logarithmic form because logarithmic functions are the inverses of exponential functions. The exponential form of a logarithmic function can be used to rewrite any logarithmic function. Because they enable us to work with enormous amounts while modifying much smaller numbers, logarithms are crucial.

The logarithm is the inverse function to exponentiation. That means the logarithm of a number x to the base b is the exponent to which b must be raised, to produce x. For example, since 1000 = 103, the logarithm base 10 of 1000 is 3, or log10 (1000) = 3. The logarithm of x to base b is denoted as logb (x), or without parentheses, logb x, or even without the explicit base, log x, when no confusion is possible, or when the base does not matter such as in big O notation.

Logarithmic scales condense broad quantities into narrower ranges. They support some models in psychophysics, aid in forensic accounting, appear in formulas counting prime numbers or roughly approximating factorials, and help to describe frequency ratios of musical intervals.
