Disclaimer: yes you can! But don’t, it might just put cuts inside your esophagus or you might not be able to digest it properly.

If you swallow a razor blade accidentally, don’t worry. You may be surprised to learn just how capable the human body is. The pH scale for acids ranges from 0 to 14, with lower values indicating stronger acids. Human stomach acid has a pH between 1.0 and 2.0, indicating that it is potent. After two hours of immersion in stomach acid, researchers found that the “thickened back of a single-edged blade” dissolved.

We got you 5 more facts!

  1. In an entire lifetime, the average person walks the equivalent of five times around the world

A person who is moderately active typically walks 7,500 steps per day. If you continue to walk on average each day and live to be 80 years old, you will have taken around 216,262,500 steps overall. According to calculations, a person with an average stride who lives to be 80 will cover a distance of nearly 110,000 miles, or the equivalent of walking 5 times around the equator of the planet.

2. You can’t taste food without saliva

Chemicals from food must first dissolve in saliva for food to have flavour. Chemicals cannot be sensed by taste receptors until they have been dissolved in a liquid. Some salivary components interact chemically with taste molecules during this process. For instance, salivary buffers (such as bicarbonate ions) reduce the concentration of free hydrogen ions (sour taste), and some salivary proteins may bond with taste compounds that give off an unpleasant aftertaste.

Here’s a quick science experiment to see whether this is true: take a clean towel and rub your tongue dry. Then, place a cookie, pretzel, or other dry item on your tongue one at a time. Drink some water after this session, then repeat. Did you notice a change?

3. Hot water freezes faster than cold water

The Mpemba effect is a strange phenomena where hot water can sometimes freeze more quickly than cold water. The creation of a frost layer over cold water that insulates it, faster evaporation of hot water that decreases the volume left to freeze, or various concentrations of solutes like CO2 are some of the theories for the Mpemba effect that have been put up. The phenomena is named after Tanzanian student Erasto Mpemba, who in his science class in the 1960s suggested that heating ice cream before freezing it might cause it to freeze more quickly.

4. Earth’s oxygen is produced by the ocean

Have you ever given any thought to the source of oxygen? Although a rainforest may come to mind, here’s an interesting scientific fact: The National Oceanic Service says that all of the fresh air is a result of marine plant-based creatures. More than half of the oxygen in the planet is produced by plankton, seaweed, and other photosynthetic organisms. Even though we may know the answer to this query, researchers have yet to solve the other oceanic puzzles.

5. It’s impossible to burp in space

We know it’s funny, but it is certainly true. When you burp on Earth, gravity keeps the liquids and solids from your recent meal down, allowing just the gas to leave your mouth. Because the gas cannot separate from the liquids and particles in the absence of gravity, burping essentially becomes puke.
