The p-block, with the p standing for “principal” and azimuthal quantum number 1, is on the right side of the standard periodic table and encompasses elements in groups 13 to 18. Their general electronic configuration is ns2 np1–6. Helium, though being the first element in group 18, is not included in the p-block. Each row of the table has a place for six p-elements except for the first row (which has none). Wiki’

6 Chapter in One

The thing with P Block is that you need to study a lot, there is a lot to do and remember.

So the P block is basically divided into 6 parts.

● Group 13

● Group 14

● Group 15

● Group 16

● Group 17

● Group 18

You need to study each and every chapter but there are few trends that are the same for all.

This block is the only one having all three types of elements: metals, nonmetals, and metalloids. The p-block elements can be described on a group-by-group basis as: group 13, the isogens; 14, the crystallogens; 15, the pnictogens; 16, the chalcogens; 17, the halogens; and 18, the helium group, composed of the noble gasses (excluding helium) and oganesson. Alternatively, the p-block can be described as containing post-transition metals; metalloids; reactive nonmetals including the halogens; and noble gasses (excluding helium).

Tips and Tricks

You should read this chapter from the NCERT as many times as you can, P Block. Additionally, attempt to condense the responses for each family into one or two pages.

Increase the number of questions you answer to determine which subjects are important.

For instance, whereas Reactions of Oxygen with Metals (which you have studied way back in lower classes) are not so relevant, the reactions of Cu, Zn, and HNO3 (dilute and concentrated) are. Named processes and catalysts are crucial.

Additionally, write down quick notes that you can review before each test.

P Block is a chapter that you struggle to recall for 5–6 months at a time, thus you should at the very least revise it and you’ll be done for any exam be it JEE mains or your board exam.
